St. Petri zu Lübeck

In her sound performance A AND NOT A, Nina Nadig explored the acoustic voids and sonic history of St. Petri Church. The focus was on the sound of a historic death bell that once hung in the church tower.
During the Second World War, the bell was removed and temporarily stored in a so-called “bell cemetery” with the aim of melting it down for the arms industry. However, this never happened. After the end of the war, when St. Petri was badly damaged, the bell was loaned to the parish of Nusse, about 30 kilometers from Lübeck.
For A AND NOT A, the current sound of the bell in Nusse was recorded and played back in St. Petri. Microphones in the church interior recorded this sound again, which was then played back in a continuous loop and re-recorded. This created a dense, atmospheric layer of sound that entered into a sensitive dialogue with the architecture and history of the church.
The performance was part of an extended supporting program that complemented the exhibition with further artistic perspectives. In this context, spaces of resonance are created in which different media, perspectives, and aesthetic approaches encounter and deepen each other.

Nina Nadig is a visual artist from Frankfurt. She creates sculptures, drawings, and sound installations in a site-sensitive process with a focus on modularity and repetition. Her works deal with aesthetic patterns shaped by social rules, architectural conditions, and cultural habits.
