A conversation with Lia Chen Perlov and Nadia Perlov
The Overbeck Society hosted a musical conversation between Lia Perlov and Nadia Perlov about their collaborative work JARDIN J’ADORE—an experimental music video that combines Baroque compositions with theatrical improvisation, stylized choreography, and a sculptural stage setting.
At the heart of the project was a live performance featuring cello adaptations of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach and other Baroque composers, performed in a temporary, sculptural version of a formal European garden.
The piece draws on visual and performative elements of historical court culture—including garden design, movement notation, and the aesthetics of Baroque dance—to reflect on the spatial organization of power, beauty, and social order. At the same time, these historical references are critically examined, particularly in relation to their continuing influence on ideas of structure, cultivation, and cultural heritage. JARDIN J’ADORE is both homage and analysis: the work celebrates the diversity of forms in Baroque art, while at the same time questioning its ideological connotations.
Through deliberate exaggerations and staged absurdities, the work explores how aesthetic traditions can both refine and regulate—thus opening up a space for reflection on music, memory, and the cultural choreography of places.
